We acknowledge the Indigenous owners of the lands of South Australia and aim to treat all Indigenous people, their customs and beliefs with respect.

History SA is a statutory authority reporting to Parliament through the Minister for the Arts.  We were established in 1981 under the History Trust of South Australia Act (1981, 1995) to encourage the research and public presentation of South Australian history and to safeguard South Australia’s material heritage.  Our Board of eight trustees report to the Minister for the Arts.

We aim to:

promote - the value, understanding and enjoyment of South Australian history.

enhance - our community’s sense of identity by presenting a diversity of perspectives on the past.

create – a better understanding of South Australia’s distinctive heritage by helping to present and interpret our diverse cultural identities.

nurture - community historical endeavour.

We are located in central Adelaide at the Torrens Parade Ground on the corner of Victoria Drive and King William Street.

Our public face is presented by our three museums – the Migration Museum, National Motor Museum and South Australian Maritime Museum.  Collectively our museums manage the significant State Historical Collection.

Through our Community History Programs unit we also manage important programs that assist local community museums and historical researchers in their work.
