Towards an online presence

The launch of History SA’s History Week website in April heralded the first milestone in the development of our new online presence. We are pleased to announce that work is now progressing on a new community museums project which will follow a similar format. Our recent research has indicated that there are currently over 250 museums and historical sites open to the public throughout South Australia including our 60 registered and accredited members of our Community Museums Program. We want to create a community museum ‘space’ on our website where not only will virtual visitors be able to get basic information on museums’ location, contact details, opening times and type of collections, but will also allow members to discuss ideas and get useful information through online blogs and forums. We intend to help our CMP members to get up to speed with online issues through training programs. First up is the free pre History Conference workshop on creating and managing images in the digital age (Murray Bridge Town Hall; on Friday 6 August at 2.30pm). This will provide an overview of technical requirements for digital images (file size, format and more) and plenty or practical information, all in the context of the National Standards. Members may also want to attend the paper being presented at the conference on museums and public history online (Sunday 8 August at 11am). We look forward to working with you to develop your computer skills and museum presence online.
